JOURNEY OF THE UNIVERSE - Special Showing

Journey of the Universe is a new 55-minute film recently shown on OPB that suggests an intriguing possibility in the human quest for a sustainable future. The film vividly describes the scientific creation story from the original flaring forth (Big Bang) 14 billion years ago to the implosion of an ancient star and resulting supernova that produced our sun, solar system, and elements beyond hydrogen and helium. The film examines how this physical constellation led to the origin of life on earth, the innate inclination of life to proliferate and become more complex, and ultimately the emergence of human consciousness.
Narrated from a Greek island, the film posits what could be an ultimate question for the human species. Does this immense journey, grounded in science, have the potential to alter our perception of what it means to be a human on earth today? After viewing the film, with the insight of two guest scientists, we will consider whether this story has the practical potential to invoke a greater sense of purpose in the current human endeavor to create a sustainable future.
